Why does my radiator have cold spots?

Following on from our advice to check your central heating before the nights and days start getting cold one of the issues you may find is cold spots in some of your radiators. There are several reasons why a radiator stays cold or has cold spots and some of the remedies you can do yourself without requiring a plumber.

Fixing a cold radiator

  • Check your boiler to make sure it is at the right setting and working properly. Some combi boilers have a summer mode that will need switching back. you may also see a flashing error message which will be the fault code that you can relay to your plumber.
  • Check to see if the pump is working. The pump will make a noise when it is attempting to heat the radiators
  • There could be air in the system that will affect one or more radiators. This is a fairly simple fix and will require that you use a radiator key to release the air in the system
  • The radiator valves could be stuck or ceased due to lack of use. If only one radiator is affected, this is usually the case. It is good practice to replace any older thermostatic valves to prevent this happening again
  • Finally, check the water pressure in the boiler. There should be a green indicator that shows where the needle on the dial should be. If you know how, you can top up the boiler so that it is at the correct pressure.

Whereas the above tasks can be quite straight forward to some homeowners it can also be a daunting thought to anyone who doesn’t know anything about their heating system.
